Erich Wolf Segal was born on August 20, 1918 in Breslau, Germany and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1933. He received degrees from Swarthmore College and Columbia University and served as a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, as well as for the Chicago Tribune, after which he taught at Columbia. He served as Dean of Faculty at the University of California-Berkeley and as President of Hamilton College. He is the author of numerous books including Man's Search for Meaning; The Universal Solvent; and The Life of Reason: The Philosophy of Immanuel Kant.
